Being Right or Making Money

Another day, another honking big funding for another online start-up (and yet another broken embargo too!).

It’s like Groundhog Day in Silicon Valley as usual.

Today, Cambridge, Mass.-based HubSpot wins tech’s version of the lottery, grabbing $32 million from Sequoia Capital, Google Ventures and also Salesforce.com.

It is unclear what the valuation for HubSpot is now, although it is likely high given it has raised $65 million now.

HubSpot makes marketing software for businesses, who use it to find prospects and generate leads, along with tools to analyze the process. It claims it has “4,000 customers, over 50 percent market share, five million leads managed, and 70 million page views tracked monthly.”

The Series D financing included HubSpot’s existing venture investors–General Catalyst Partners, Matrix Partners, and Scale Venture Partners–and part of it will be used to cash out existing shareholders. In previous rounds, the start-up has raised $33 million.

Here is the official press release:

Sequoia, Google Ventures, and Salesforce.com Invest $32 Million in HubSpot

Marketing Software Company Attracts New Strategic Investors

CAMBRIDGE, MA–(Marketwire – March 8, 2011)–Today, for the first time ever, Sequoia Capital, Google Ventures and Salesforce.com all invested together in one company, providing HubSpot with a Series D round of financing through a $32 million investment. HubSpot provides all-in-one marketing software used by over 4,000 businesses to get found by more prospects, convert them into leads and sales, and analyze the entire marketing process.

“The fundamental way that people shop, learn, and buy has changed radically in the last few years. HubSpot helps transform the way businesses market from outbound marketing (cold calls, email blasts, and direct mail) to inbound marketing (Google, blogs, social media, mobile, etc.),” said Brian Halligan, co-founder and CEO of HubSpot.

Sequoia Capital has a long history of partnering with founders to help them build long-term, multi-billion dollar companies, including Google, LinkedIn, AdMob, YouTube, Yahoo!, Apple, and Oracle. “We back companies that are transforming their industries,” said Jim Goetz, General Partner at Sequoia Capital. “HubSpot is the emerging category leader in the SaaS marketing sector. Their customer base exceeds that of all the other relevant marketing software companies combined, including Eloqua, Marketo, Genius, and Manticore.”

“Today, every company needs to succeed in search, social, sales, and marketing–I can’t think of a more powerful trifecta than Google, Salesforce.com, and HubSpot. With 4,000 customers, HubSpot is already a clear marketing leader–now, with this new infusion of capital and recognition by Google’s venture arm and Salesforce.com, HubSpot has a great opportunity to separate itself from the pack and become the leading marketing platform in the small and medium business space,” said Brent Leary, co-founder of CRM Essentials.

Google Ventures Partner, Rich Miner (formerly co-founder of Android) said, “We agree with HubSpot’s belief that search engines, social media, and mobile devices have fundamentally changed how businesses should market themselves. We’re thrilled to support their efforts to help thousands of small and medium businesses reach potential customers.”

Dharmesh Shah, co-founder and CTO of HubSpot commented, “We founded the company based on a simple premise: Businesses want an easy-to-use, complete and integrated marketing platform that helps them get more leads and customers. We plan to use this new capital to further invest in this ambitious vision and further our existing lead in the marketing software category.”

Blogger Andrew Trench recently presented a theory on the threshold of when Internet penetration starts to matter, writing:

Social networks have also been given plenty of credit for the revolution unfolding in Egypt.

So I went and had a look at the numbers over on www.internetworldstats.com to see what they could tell us about these two scenarios. Well, fascinatingly, both Egypt and Tunisia have seen a massive growth in internet users and internet penetration over the last 10 years.

Both have now got internet penetration of over 20% and in Tunisia's case it was as high as 34%.

While it is clearly simplistic to over-state this factor and there must be many more drivers contributing to such a rapid political uprising, it is obviously a factor as evidenced by the Egyptian regime pulling the plug on the country's internet access to try and block the rising tide of revolt.

My back-of-napkin theory is this: that a rapid increase in internet penetration in a repressive regime does play an important role as it provides an unfettered channel of communication allowing disaffected citizens to share views - and more importantly - to rapidly organise and mobilise.

If Egypt and Tunisia are valid case studies, it looks like internet penetration of around 20% is the mark.

Geopolitics & Macroeconomics adds:

Internet penetration: Social networking sites were critical to sustaining the momentum in the recent protests. The internet penetration in Egypt is 16%. In Libya, it is a meagre 5% [1]. The unrest in Libya has thus far remained concentrated in regions that are geographically distant from the seat of ‘real' power (see more on this below). The dependence of momentum on internet communication is far greater in Libya than in Egypt where protests began in Cairo itself.

Taking the conversation to Pakistan, Sabene Saigol writes, on BrandRepublic:

Perhaps one reason for this is that we're still not that used to communicating via the ‘net - maybe we need greater broadband and internet penetration. Personally I think it is more to do with culture - while Pakistani internet users are savvy to using social media to connect with friends, I feel they have not yet ‘crossed over' to seeing SM as a means for professional communications - or even wider social communications that go beyond their immediate circle. Yes, there are no doubt savvy people - both within marketing and tech circles, and outside - however, these people are likely a tiny proportion of the total number of ‘net and social media users.

For Apple, the mobile market is a cash cow. The company’s iPhone and iPad are proving to be the top mobile companions for people around the globe. Apple has sold over 100 million iPhones. Its iPad sales have hit 15 million. The company understands the mobile market and it knows how to capitalize on it.

But what about the living room? It has the Apple TV, sure, and the Mac mini is often times connected to an HDTV, but what else has Apple done to push the envelope in the living room? It still hasn’t launched the long-rumored television we keep hearing about, and it seems that offering a game console — a hope for many Apple fans over the past few years — won’t happen.

I fully realize that Apple can’t be everything to every customer. It delivers computers, smartphones, tablets, personal media players, two operating systems, wireless routers, and much more. But I also realize that Apple is an entertainment company. It’s about trying to give people more opportunity to enjoy their lives through technology. And it would only make sense if it doubled down on the living room.

Let’s turn our attention to the Apple TV for a minute.

Prior to its announcement in September, rumors were running rampant over what the former “hobby” would offer. Folks thought it would deliver gaming, interface with DVRs, include Apple’s App Store, and much more. They thought it would be a sizable update over its predecessor.

Instead, Apple offered a stripped-down alternative.

The second-generation Apple TV comes with the ability for users to stream Netflix content. It has Flickr and Internet radio. And it allows users to stream their music over their home network to their televisions. It offers movies and television shows, as well, but most would agree that it’s slim pickings for now.

At that event in September, Steve Jobs said that Apple’s research showed customers didn’t want everything a company could pile into a device. They simply want the ability to consume the content they enjoy without the fuss that might come along with something like Google TV-based devices.

But by delivering the bare minimum, Apple did itself no favors. The company took the easy way out and pretended like it no longer views the living room as a hobby. The only issue is, the Apple TV is still a hobby. It’s a device that lacks all the functionality we’ve come to expect from Apple — a company that typically prides itself on offering the best value for the cash. And at least so far, it leaves me wanting more.

So, what am I looking for? I want to see Apple improve the Apple TV by bringing its App Store to the platform. I’d also like to see some kind of gaming component come to the device, either through the App Store or as part of a more-capable platform.

And perhaps most importantly, I’d like to see Apple think beyond its set-top box and deliver products that try something new. I’m not sold on the possibility of Apple offering a groundbreaking television, but if it can surprise me, I’m all for it.

Simply put, I’m looking for Apple to be Apple. Right now, it’s just like every other company in the living room; it’s content to have a presence but not dominate.

That needs to end.

No single company can stake claim to the living room right now. Steve Jobs just needs to take advantage of that void and do something special.

But first, he needs to take the living room — and its revenue potential — seriously.

Titles from major book publisher Random House will now appear in Apple’s iBooks store. The news was one of many talking points covered earlier today at Apple’s media event. Random House had previously been the only major publisher not represented in Apple’s popular iOS book store, as it was not willing to grant Apple the 30% cut taken on titles sold through iBooks. The addition of Random House is a major coup for Apple as it looks to compete with the likes of Amazon’s Kindle bookstore and other popular offerings. Hit the break for Apple’s full press release.

It looks like women have caught up with men in numbers in the workplace. For the first time in history, women in the USA now outnumber men in the workforce, and there are now more women in supervisory positions than there are males. The question is whether they will handle the downside of working any better than men.

According to an article by Ella L. J. Edmondson Bell, Ph.D., titled The 21st Century Workplace -- Are Women the New Men?, the economic downturn has hit men harder. They held nearly 80 percent of jobs that have been lost during what is now being called the "mancession." Will women now inherit the stress, pressure, exhaustion, burn out and heart attacks commonly associated with male leaders in business?

Some predict that this new female-dominated workplace will mean a softening of the corporate culture, with more benevolent leaders. Others foresee just the opposite. Ella says many women don't want to be seen as "soft" -- and others simply aren't. No one would call Carly Fiorina, the head of Hewlett Packard from 1999 to 2005, a wilting lily. According to her memoir, Tough Choices, she was sometimes referred to as Chainsaw Carly.

All of this is especially relevant on the entrepreneurial side, since statistics show that women are starting businesses at more than twice the rate of their male counterparts. Some would argue that the growing success rate of women entrepreneurs shows that they are resourceful, and better able to succeed, despite the odds.

While I'm sure we will continue to see progress on the female side, I predict that they will struggle with the same major challenges faced today by men. These include:

  1. Funding your dream. Raising money is hard, whether you are counting on friends, investors, or banks. I rarely see women at angel investment groups, either asking for money, or offering to fund new ventures. Men seem more focused on this one.

  2. Need for increased confidence and mindset skills. Many women and men are paralyzed by perfection, plagued by pessimism, and the need to satisfy others, rather than themselves. We need more women leaders.

  3. Motivation to succeed. Every entrepreneur needs to love what they do, and believe so strongly in their product or service that they can weather the tough times. On this one, it's easy to spot the ones with passion, from either gender.

  4. Manage time and priorities. Women, often more than men, try to do too much. It's hard to balance the continual demands of the business, personal relationships, and home life. Every entrepreneur needs to prioritize the important tasks ahead of urgent tasks.

  5. Never stop learning. After you start your business, the learning really begins. True entrepreneurs look at failures as their best learning experiences. Networking, and using your network is the next most important element of learning.

I don't see any challenges which are so gender specific that they can't be overcome by any entrepreneur. Yet I don't think women should be convinced that the battle for equality is almost over. There is still the question of why there are so few women in high places, and why the average income for women in business is about 68% of men's income.

What I am hoping is that women will not just be the new men, and suffer from the same maladies and limitations. I'll be looking for women to create the "new business culture" that every worker wants -- better role definitions, more effective and productive leadership, and better work-life balance. That would make women entrepreneurs the new women, rather than the new men!

Making Money From the Internet

I recently read about Matt Slauson, an NFL player, who has been pretty successful over the last few years but is now worried about his financial future. He's concerned about the NFL lock-out and what it might do to his income. Even though a player can have a decent contract, some of the money is usually an up-front bonus and the rest is performance-based.

Matt Slauson isn’t destitute by any means, but he decided to move his wife and baby into his parents’ house to lower expenses and boost savings. This seems like a drastic act in light of the fact that he was making hundreds of thousands of dollars per year, but money can get used up quickly if you expect it will never end or if you’re not paying attention. Matt is going with a prudent solution to a situation that hopefully will only be temporary.

When you live at home with your parents what are the real savings? Normally your housing costs take up approximately one third of your monthly basic budget. If you move in with your parents, they should be willing to continue to pay for those costs that aren’t affected by you being there, like the mortgage, home insurance, and taxes, or if they’re renting, then the monthly rent.

Checking the website Rentals.com I looked at the average prices for a two bedroom rental in Syracuse, NY, Long Branch, NJ and Orlando, FL and they all were about the same: $1000 per month. So right off the bat you can save a nice chunk of change by moving in with your parents, ($12,000 per year). This assumes that you aren’t sharing the apartment with someone else who is splitting the rent but even in that case you would be saving $500 per month or $6,000 per year.

Comcast Chief Executive Brian Roberts let investors in on a little secret Wednesday during his keynote speech at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom conference in San Francisco.

The 51-year-old executive's biggest concern over the last  year was nothow best to fold NBC Universal into Comcast.  No, Roberts said, it was the transition to replace his No. 2 executive, Steve Burke, who had been in charge of the day-to-day operations of the company's lucrative cable business.

Last month, when Comcast took control of NBC Universal, Burke became chief executive of the television and movie company.  Burke surrendered his role and title of chief operating officer of Comcast.  Neil Smit -- who joined Comcast 13 months ago from cable company Charter Communications -- is now executive vice president in charge of all of Comcast's cable operations.

Roberts called the executive changes Comcast's "most important transition."

After all, Comcast's core business of cable TV, Internet and telephone service brings in $36 billion in annual revenue.  Comcast's programming business, which now includes NBC Universal, generates a little more than half that amount.

Despite dramatic changes underway in the media business, Roberts remains bullish on the company's prospects. Comcast raised its dividend last month and plans to buy back $2 billion in stock. The Philadelphia-based company, Roberts said, took control of NBC Universal at a particularly advantageous time. The NBC Universal businesses are now doing better than when the deal was first announced in late 2009, and Comcast needed less money than it had anticipated -- $6.2 billion in cash versus $6.5 billion at the time of the announcement -- to pay General Electric Co., which now has a minority stake in NBC Universal.

The television advertising market has rebounded in the last year, and there's a new stream of revenue as cable companies begin to pay the broadcast networks for their programming.

Roberts said he expects NBC to help bolster Comcast's Golf Channel and Versus, a cable sports network. On the movie side, Comcast can use its clout to shorten the traditional period of time before movies become available on DVD and video-on-demand services, a benefit to Comcast customers.  And soon, NBC Universal programming will be available, joining Turner channels, HBO, Starz and Showtime, on Comcast's anytime, everywhere TV service, Xfinity TV, which now has an application available for the iPad.

On Wednesday, Roberts suggested that the company's jewel is its broadband Internet service, which now has 17 million customers. That makes Comcast the largest Internet provider in the nation at a time when consumers are increasingly watching news and entertainment online.

"In the next 10 years, people will want more bits in their house than ever before," Roberts said, referring to Internet network capacity. And Comcast's investment in its high-speed networks should help it battle rivals that have cut into Comcast's customer base:  satellite TV providers and telephone companies AT&T and Verizon, which now offer Internet and TV channels.

"We are focused on broadband,"  Roberts said.  "The bet we are making is to be the best pipe. It's as simple as that."

What to Expect When Hiring a Roofing Contractor

When the time comes to correct or replace your homes roof, it's really a challenging task to find somebody that is actually competent to do the job. There are lots of roofing contractors available, but the ones who will perform a congrats for any sensible cost are not often simple to find. If you're in the market for a service provider, make use of the ideas below for interviewing as well as hiring the correct one.

Job interview and Consultation

Interview by magnusfranklin

The majority of roofing contractors provide free consultation services. This is particularly important, since it gives them an opportunity to assess exactly what your homes roof needs, and it provides you with an opportunity to assess all of them. As with all of companies, believe in intuition concerning the people a person allow up on your roof. No matter exactly how great the contractor's reputation or even suggestion, he or she ought to start by presenting you with a business card. If a service provider arrives looking as well as talking within an less than professional manner, chances are that the task he's going to perform will also be less than professional. This isn't to say that you should anticipate contractors to arrive within fits. They is going to be hiking on your roof, so most is going to be dressed in denim jeans as well as function boots or even sneakers. If the actual contractor seems to be interested in talking on his mobile phone during your roof compared to he's within evaluating your own roof's needs, which may be another indication that he is not the main one to do the job. For your legal protection, be certain that the contractor has sufficient legal responsibility insurance.

Roofing Evaluation

Expect that the service provider is going to be going up in your roof. Actually, any kind of service provider who not need to go up in your roof to judge the issue ought to be immediately reduced. Those who're serious about their work will either create a sketching of the roof's surface area and mark problem areas onto it as they undergo their evaluation, or even they will take photos or video clip of the surface area while they are available online for. This is an extremely important step, because it enables you to observe exactly what the troubles are and know how they'll be set.

Estimation

Roofing And Roofing Contractor In HOLLYWOOD, FL by roofinghub

The next step would be the written estimate. The contractor will take out their calculator and come track of a written estimate. Some companies will go to their own truck or even van and write down the actual proposal, while others will crunch the actual amounts to do the job prior to you. Once you are given the suggestion, ensure that you comprehend which items is going to be used, just how long the job will take and when you will find any additional or even concealed costs that could arise throughout the repair from the roof. The contractor should be able to solution all of these concerns effortlessly as well as forewarn a person of any additional costs that could be incurred if the roof's ethics end up being broken inside.

After you have received several written estimations from roofing contractors, evaluate what each organization or service provider would like to provide for that cost. Do not always discount the highest bid, because occasionally the highest bet will actually function as the contractor who does the task properly. Additionally, be wary of bids that are significantly less than others. They may be utilizing substandard products or perhaps be unethical concerning the possibility of hidden costs. Most importantly, trust your intuition and go with the service provider that makes you feel quite comfortable regarding handing more than your hard earned money.

Seven Uyghurs Sentenced to Death

2011-03-23

Critics of the sentences say China has politicized the robberies as acts of terrorism.

A Uyghur man walks past armed Chinese security forces in Urumqi, July 17, 2009.

Chinese authorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang have ordered the executions of seven ethnic minority Uyghur men convicted of "violent" crimes, official media said on Wednesday.

The death sentences were handed down by the Supreme People's Court in recent days, according to state media in the regional capital, Urumqi.

The men were accused in connection with three separate attacks late last year in the Silk Road city of Kashgar, according to the news website Urumqi Online.

According to another website, the Xinjiang-based Tianshan news site, Aimaiti Tuheti, Yiming Dawuti, and unnamed "others" killed a security guard at a pedestrian mall as part of a failed Aug. 7 robbery attempt.

In a separate incident on Oct. 12, it said, Nuermaimaiti Aobulikasimu and 11 others broke into a house, bound and killed the couple living in it, and took their possessions.

It said the group also broke into the homes of two brothers, robbed them, and killed six people in a Nov. 11 attack in Kashgar.

The report gave no information about the victims or the schedule for the executions.

Three of the men were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, a sentence that is normally commuted to life imprisonment in China's judicial system.

They were convicted of deliberate homicide and armed robbery by the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court in the first instance.

'Strike hard' campaign

A Han Chinese resident of Urumqi surnamed Yang said a reference to "terrorism" in official news reports on the case showed that it was being politicized by the authorities, who have launched a series of "strike hard" campaigns in Xinjiang following deadly ethnic violence in July 2009.

"There is an implied political meaning; that they were somehow engaged in separatist activities or ethnic divisions," said Yang.

Exile Uyghur groups said the trials had been conducted behind closed doors, with scant opportunity for public scrutiny.

"The entire process against these men, from the trial through to the judgment, was opaque," said Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress.

"There was also very little reasonable evidence to convict them on a legal basis, because all the evidence came from one side of the case," he said.

"We strongly condemn the Chinese government for continuing to pursue their policies of ethnic division," said Raxit.

"We are also strongly opposed to the death penalty in this case."

Earlier cases

Last month, the Supreme Court sentenced four Uyghurs to death for alleged involvement in an Aug. 19 bomb attack in Xinjiang’s western Aksu city.

The World Uyghur Congress pointed to concerns over lack of transparency in those cases too.

The Aksu blast left eight people dead, including two of the bombers, and 15 wounded after a man riding a three-wheeled vehicle threw explosives at a group of uniformed patrolmen. Four Uyghurs were arrested shortly after the attack.

State media characterized the cases as acts of terrorism and unrelated to longstanding ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and Han Chinese in the region.

Exiled Uyghur dissident Rebiya Kadeer has warned that attacks like those in Aksu will continue to occur until Beijing addresses the underlying source of tension in the region.

Millions of Uyghurs—a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim—populate Central Asia and Xinjiang.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Those frustrations erupted in July 2009 in deadly riots that left nearly 200 people dead, by the Chinese government's tally.

At least 26 people, mostly Uyghurs, were sentenced to death in the aftermath of the riots, many of whom have been executed, according to state media.

China is believed to execute more people each year than the rest of the world’s countries combined, although the government does not publish official figures.

Rights groups say Beijing may execute as many as several thousand prisoners annually.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining ties to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

New training scheme

China on Wednesday also announced a training scheme which places ethnic minority graduates from Xinjiang in work elsewhere in China.

Governments of the destination cities will spend 450 million yuan (U.S.$ 69 million) for the program, while Xinjiang will spend 400 million yuan (U.S.$ 61 million), the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The program targets some 60,000 jobless college graduates in Xinjiang, around 80 percent of whom are from ethnic minorities, and 60 percent of whom are women.

However, some commentators see the move as an attempt to assimilate non-Han Chinese into mainstream Chinese culture.

"From the point of view of ethnic minorities, the graduate work scheme is really taking the cream of youth from the minorities and using them to 'further cultural development,'" wrote one ethnic minority user on a popular microblogging service.

"In fact, the culture that is being advanced is Han culture, and this group of young people will have been totally brainwashed," the microblog update said.

An Urumqi resident surnamed Li agreed.

"They have run senior high school schemes like this before during the past few years," he said.

"Whether it's high-schoolers or graduate training programs, these are measures that are aimed at thought control and brainwashing, and the 'Partification' of their education," he said.

Whether it had been ever uncertain, info obtained through the whistleblower web site, Wikileaks, offers confirmed Chinese language federal government worries more than it's ongoing charge of the location this phone calls Xinjiang, also is referred to as East Turkestan. The leaked out cables through Ough.Utes. diplomats show the degree to which Chinese government bodies attempt to persuade government authorities globally to consider it's stance on problems affecting Uyghurs. The actual wires also show the U . s . States' concerns as well as views concerning the ongoing repressive measures in the region.

Most illuminating associated with Chinese federal government stress are the wires directed in order to Chinese language frustration, or even the specter of Chinese language ire, within the discharge of Uyghur detainees within Guantánamo to third nations. The December 29, 08 cable television applies how Chinese language Helper Foreign Reverend Liu Jieyi fulfilled with the Ough.S. Ambassador in order to The far east to tone of voice Beijing's powerful opposition of release to any kind of country other than China, which if the U.S. do indeed accede to this ask for it might "avoid injury to bilateral relationships and to co-operation ‘in important areas'". Furthermore, a February 2009 cable television describes the way the Chinese Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded as the possible discharge of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees because "an unfavorable behave toward us" and a "slap in the face". That the Ough.S. federal government was company within not releasing the detainees to China illustrates the actual extent of the politicized nature of the Chinese judicial system. Legitimate issues over terrorism are understandable, however in the actual U.Utes. government's observe the detainees would probably encounter torture as well as delivery if they returned to China

Chinese government stress regarding the actual Uyghur Guantánamo detainees wasn't only applied to the Ough.Utes. federal government, but additionally in order to New Zealand along with a handful of European government authorities that were considering resettlement. Albania, Germany and Finland, as well as Eu fellow member says all appear to have paid for the actual impact associated with Chinese federal government unhappiness. Regarding Indonesia, that was initially prepared to consider two Uyghurs upon purely relief reasons, Uyghur Guantánamo instances were less better than additional detainees because of the unwanted effects accepting Uyghurs would have on relations along with The far east. The Might Eight, '09 cable applies exactly how "German Ambassador Erina Schaefer documented which Indonesia had informed The far east of the Ough.S. ask for to accept some Uighur detainees kept from Guantánamo coupled with already been subsequently warned by The far east associated with ‘a large load upon bilateral relations' if Germany were to simply accept any detainees".

The diplomatic cables also talk about the actual unrest in Urumchi, the actual local capital, in This summer 2009. The This summer Thirteen, '09 cable talking about bulk incidents in The far east says:

"Ethnic riots like those in Xinjiang July 5-7 and in Tibet in March associated with 2008 differ markedly in source and character from bulk incidents, XXXXXXXXXXXX emphasized to PolOff [Political Officer] on XXXXXXXXXXXX. Each present serious problems for the Celebration, XXXXXXXXXXXX said, but the Party leadership would not wait to open fire on Uighurs or even Tibetans when they considered it necessary to restore order. Bulk occurrences present a different type of risk, he said, since the management is actually ‘afraid' to fire upon Han rioters with regard to fear of causing massive public outrage that will change against the Party."

This is a chilling viewpoint, especially when 1 views the evidence presented by 50 percent reviews released this year by the Uyghur Human Privileges Project (UHRP) and Amnesty International that detail eyewitness accounts from the use of lethal reside fire towards Uyghur protestors within This summer '09. In addition, the declaration which fireplace wouldn't be used towards Han Chinese protestors has resonances for that different approach taken by Chinese language protection causes within Urumchi to Han Chinese language direct orders within September 2009. Throughout those direct orders, after that Celebration Secretary, Wang Lequan, tackled protesters, that had required he let them know about federal government responses to protection issues. An identical ask for to meet using the Celebration Secretary through Uyghur protesters in This summer wasn't fulfilled.

The actual broader repercussions from the unrest also saw a brief dialogue about the impact it might have upon Iran-China relations, as well as on relationships with Australia following World Uyghur Our elected representatives Leader, Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, spoke at the National Push Club in Canberra in July '09. In the second option situation, the Chinese government "privately warn[ed] a significant Aussie financial institution that sponsors the nation's Press Membership to use its influence to block a Kadeer speech there".

The United States' concerns about the scenario in the Uyghur region are available via within the cables. Inside a discussion on plan direction within Tibet, U.Utes. authorities clarify that it will end up being not possible for Chinese leaders to consider the softer collection "if they look like doing so below international pressure". The actual cable television dated April 16, 08, 30 days following the episode associated with unrest in Tibetan regions, additionally relayed the actual observation "that household balance remains the leadership's top priority above all else, which means there will ‘almost surely' be no relaxation from the present hard line upon Tibet or perhaps in locations such as Xinjiang." The information included in the cable television additionally storage sheds gentle on the severe level of sensitivity that china government sights territorial integrity, and also the feasible drip more than associated with unrest from Tibet.

The prospect associated with solutions to tensions in Tibet and Xinjiang as a result of civil society are debated in a February 24, 08 cable. Whilst recommending that China's financial success increases its resistance to democratic reform, the actual cable also discusses exactly how Chinese leaders begin to see the usefulness of "a restricted growth associated with municipal society, including enhancements in the guideline of regulation and a stronger part with regard to authorized beliefs, NGOs, charities along with other stars within areas that bring about sociable balance and do not problem Communist Celebration rule." This can be a notable change in considering, which has observed U.Utes. officials market the idea that Chinese financial development, and financial relationships along with China brings about a progressively democratic society; nevertheless, more faith seems to be placed in the grassroots movement than one that starts in the top quantity of a Chinese language government. Nevertheless, the actual cable proves that "[i]n places such as Tibet and Xinjiang, driving a car associated with separatism leads to tight restrictions on the development of municipal society." This approach is viewed as counter-productive by the official, who shows that the actual Ough.S. government "should still express...serious concerns over Beijing's individual rights report as well as attract China's developing consciousness that higher regard for human rights, religious independence and also the rule associated with regulation assists to advertise the very improvement as well as sociable stability which China seeks as well as to improve China's worldwide image." This type of strategy would consider substantial diplomatic skills thinking about "China's paranoid fear the Usa secretly promotes regime change as well as ‘separatists' in Taiwan, Tibet as well as Xinjiang".

The actual wires offer insight into the actual every day company of diplomacy that's hardly ever owned by everyone, which is interesting to note the amount of work done behind closed doors upon Uyghur problems. The importance of the role of the us as a keep track of associated with Uyghur human privileges problems within private discussions is made clear, and contrasts with its tactful open public stance. The staff of the Uyghur Human Privileges Task is actually well aware of pressure china government puts upon Uyghur activists; still, the facts of Chinese language government pressure on its alternatives is illustrative of the diploma that Chinese officials attempt to control contradictory narratives. With more revelations in the future through Wikileaks, issues over Uyghurs may not grab the headlines, however the cables possess get rid of new light on the documentation of individual rights conditions within the Uyghur region.

Most illuminating of Chinese language federal government pressure would be the wires pointing in order to Chinese language anger, or the specter associated with Chinese language ire, over the release of Uyghur detainees in Guantánamo to third countries. The Dec 29, 08 cable relates exactly how Chinese language Assistant Foreign Reverend Liu Jieyi met with the Ough.Utes. Ambassador in order to China to tone of voice Beijing's strong competitors associated with release in order to any kind of country apart from China, and that if the U.Utes. do certainly accede to this request it might "avoid harm to bilateral relationships and also to cooperation ‘in important areas'". In addition, a Feb 2009 cable television describes how the Chinese language Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded the actual feasible release of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees because "an unfavorable behave toward us" and a "slap within the face". That the Ough.S. government stood company in not liberating the actual detainees to The far east demonstrates the extent from the politicized character of the Chinese language judicial system. Legitimate concerns over terrorism are easy to understand, but in the U.S. government's observe the detainees might probably encounter do-it-yourself torture and execution when they came back in order to China

Chinese government stress regarding the Uyghur Guantánamo detainees wasn't only applied to the actual Ough.S. government, but also in order to New Zealand and a number of Western governments that were thinking about resettlement. Albania, Indonesia and Finland, as well as European Union member says just about all have the symptoms of paid for the impact of Chinese government unhappiness. Regarding Indonesia, which was at first prepared to consider two Uyghurs upon solely relief grounds, Uyghur Guantánamo cases were much less better than other detainees due to the unwanted effects accepting Uyghurs might have on relationships along with The far east. A May Eight, '09 cable applies exactly how "German Ambassador Erina Schaefer reported which Germany experienced knowledgeable China of the U.Utes. ask for to accept a few Uighur detainees kept at Guantánamo and had already been subsequently cautioned by The far east of ‘a large load upon bilateral relations' in the event that Indonesia had been to accept any kind of detainees".

Each existing serious trouble for the actual Celebration, XXXXXXXXXXXX stated, however the Party management wouldn't wait to spread out fireplace on Uighurs or even Tibetans if they considered it necessary to recover purchase. Mass incidents pose another type of risk, he explained, since the management is actually ‘afraid' to fire on Han rioters with regard to fear of causing massive open public outrage that would turn from the Celebration."

This is a relaxing viewpoint, particularly when 1 considers evidence offered in two reports launched this year by the Uyghur Human Privileges Project (UHRP) and Amnesty International that fine detail eyewitness accounts of the utilization of deadly reside fireplace towards Uyghur protestors in This summer 2009. In addition, the actual declaration which fireplace would not be used against Han Chinese protestors has resonances for that various approach used by Chinese language security causes within Urumchi in order to Han Chinese direct orders within Sept 2009. Throughout those direct orders, after that Party Secretary, Wang Lequan, addressed demonstrators, that had demanded that he let them know about federal government reactions to security concerns. An identical request to meet using the Party Secretary through Uyghur demonstrators in July was not met.

The actual wider repercussions from the unrest also saw a short dialogue about the effect it might have upon Iran-China relationships, as well as on relationships with Sydney after World Uyghur Our elected representatives President, Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, talked in the National Press Membership within Canberra in July '09. Within the second option situation, the Chinese federal government "privately warn[ed] a major Australian bank that sponsors the National Push Club to make use of its impact to bar a Kadeer speech there".

The actual U . s . States' issues about the situation within the Uyghur region are available via within the wires. Inside a discussion upon plan path within Tibet, Ough.S. authorities explain that it will be not possible for Chinese frontrunners to consider the much softer line "if they look like they are doing this below international pressure". The actual cable dated 04 16, 08, one month following the outbreak of unrest within Tibetan regions, additionally relayed the actual observation "that household balance continues to be leadership's main concern most of all, meaning there will ‘almost surely' end up being no rest of the current hard line upon Tibet or perhaps in locations like Xinjiang." The information contained in the cable television also sheds gentle on the severe sensitivity that the Chinese government sights territorial integrity, and also the possible spill more than associated with unrest through Tibet.

The chance associated with methods to tensions in Tibet as well as Xinjiang arising from civil culture tend to be discussed inside a February 24, 08 cable. Whilst recommending which China's economic achievement increases it's potential to deal with democratic reform, the cable television also talks about exactly how Chinese frontrunners see the effectiveness associated with "a limited expansion of municipal culture, such as enhancements within the rule associated with law along with a more powerful part for authorized beliefs, NGOs, non profit organizations and other stars within areas which contribute to social stability and don't problem Communist Celebration guideline." This is a significant change in thinking, which has seen U.Utes. authorities promote the notion which Chinese language financial development, and economic relationships with The far east brings in regards to a progressively democratic culture; nevertheless, much more faith seems to be placed in the grassroots movement compared to one that begins in the top levels of the Chinese government. Nevertheless, the actual cable television proves that "[i]n areas such as Tibet as well as Xinjiang, driving a car of separatism leads to tighter limitations about the development of municipal society." Muslim mainly, the Uyghur people have a deep religious identity which, in particular, enabled them to maintain a strong big difference towards the Chinese enemy. Indeed, the Uyghur Empire of Mongolia knew a great civilization, until its absorption by the Mongolian Empire in the XIIIth century.

While in their historical past, the Uyghurs successively taken on Shamanism, Manicheism, Buddhism and the Nestorianism before lastly changing to Islam when the Arab conquerors beat the Chinese in year 751 BC., therefore opening the way to the Islamization of the entire Central Asia.

Under the influence of the beliefs which they adopted, the Uyghurs taken successively, and at times in a competing way, a great number of written forms (turco-runic, brahmi, tokharien, soghdien) before developing their own unique graphic system.

The entrance of Islam was a great change simply because it was followed by the absorption of the Uyghur areas in the immense Turkic and Muslim Empire. Thus, the descendants of Genghis Khan progressively replaced their writing by a Arabo-Persan alphabet, still used at present.

If their writing, their language and their religion mark a real difference with the culture of Chinese Han, Uyghur People also differ from their aspect, so characteristic of Central Asia's people. A matt skin, eyes representing a whole pallet of colors, from black to deep blue, features directing out to the Mongolian, Turkish or Uzbek roots of these men and these women.

For a few years, China has integrated the proper identity of these remote people, although they represent only nine million inhabitants - a little for this great region. So, Uyghur people are now part of the fifty six racial minority groups having been known in an official way by the People's Republic of China.

This law will allow them a few privileges in a country exactly where their big difference is very often repressed. Therefore, Uyghur people escape the "single child policy" and their language is known as the second official language in Xinjiang.

The integration of the Uyghurs and their culture in the People's Republic of China, however, appears very illusory. The presence of all-natural sources in Xinjiang, and its distance with locations recognised as sensitive, clearly encouraged the government to increase the sinicization of this area. Million of Han thus came to settle in this new Chinese eldorado, monopolizing the more significant responsibility work opportunities.

In reaction to this true will to assimilate the Uyghurs into the Chinese culture, an independent party like East Turkistan Islamic Movement(ETIM) was born in the early 1990.

Saying more freedom, but especially the recognition of their true identity, this movement was seriously repressed by the power authorities in place Xinjiang.

The events of September 11, 2001, were the perfect occasion for the Chinese government to justify true reprisals: they declared the "Uyghur freedom fighters" as dangerous terrorists linked to Al Quaida because of their Muslim origins and their proximity with Pakistan and Afghanistan... However, the terrible repression which followed did not calm down the anger. The Uyghurs population continues today to proudly continue to keep their identification and their tradition , even though they become a minority on their own territory.

Making Money Without

Marco Arment, the former CTO of the Tumblr blog platform, is best known these days for his time-shifting reading app Instapaper. But he could start a side-job as a financial advisor to start-ups. His motto: Get the money from your customers, not investors.

Arment’s more traditional take is built largely on the idea that if he puts out a good product, there’s no shame in asking customers to pay for it. And the more they pay, the less he needs to rely on outside investors. Arment said many developers are of the mindset that they need to amass a huge number of eyeballs through free services. But they don’t focus enough on building a solid product that can command loyalty and payment from consumers, and instead try to gain profitability through advertising and turning to outside venture capital.

By contrast, Arment says his efforts to monetize Instapaper have been successful because he was able to leverage the hard work he put into his paid versions and the good will he’s gotten back from consumers. And that has allowed him to avoid outside funding, something he plans on doing for the forseeable future.

Don’t Take Funding if You Don’t Need It

“If a service can be profitable and breakeven without VC money, you don’t need to take it,” Arment told me in an interview. “There’s no reason for developers to get a lot of users without charging. There’s another path. My goal is to spread that message: Charge for something and make more than you spend.”

Arment launched Instapaper as a free website in January 2008 and became profitable later that fall when he first began selling a paid iPhone app alongside a free version. He’s been profitable ever since. Arment won’t disclose his revenue, but he said he can cover his expenses and can afford to hire a couple more people if he needed. He left his Tumblr job in September to devote himself to Instapaper.

Though Arment maintains a free iPhone app, he said the focus of the company has been on the paid versions which are updated first (a new update is expected in the next month or so). He has yet to release a free iPad version and has only gotten three emails about the lack of it. Most seem happy to pay for the $5 iPad version. Between 25 and 33 percent of people pay for the $5 paid iPhone version. In fact, as an experiment, he pulled the free iPhone app from the app store for a week a little while back and found that only one person emailed. Sales of the paid version didn’t go up, but they didn’t go down either, he said.

“The free version isn’t really competing as much as I expected with the paid version; a lot of people go straight to the paid version,” he said. “It was only a week but the people who were going to the free version would not have gone to the paid version.”

Let Users Thank You by Paying You

That’s what’s allowed Arment to really focus on the paid segment. In fact, he still questions the value of the free version at times because it can leave a more negative impression for users with its limited set of features. Arment said his paying users have surprised him with their support. He started a $1 a month subscription plan in October that didn’t actually offer much in the way of extra features. It was more of a way to let users show their support for Instapaper. He said the response was overwhelmingly positive.

“That was a huge surprise to me how well it’s doing given there’s no real incentive to do it besides good will. But it ends up that good will is powerful,” Arment said. “It shows that people will pay for something they like because they want to ensure its future.”

Arment is testing the theory again with a new API that leverages his subscription plan. For developers who want to build apps with Instapaper integration, Arment said last month he will require their users to subscribe to Instapaper. Again, the response has been very positive, said Arment. Two hundred developers have applied to get access to the API. All this money-making has allowed Arment to sidestep venture capital money. He has had repeated offers, but Arment said accepting VC funding is akin to taking on a new boss, and the act of raising and maintaining money is a full-time job, he said.

Venture Capital Is Like Having Another Boss

“If you can go without funding, you can be a one- or two-person shop without a whole level of bosses,” he said. “You’re not worried about getting more money and getting diluted anymore.”

Arment’s approach doesn’t work for everyone. He was fortunate to be able to this as a side job and build it up while at Tumblr. And he acknowledges that the lack of funding could be a problem if he wanted to build a staff quickly. But he believes his experience shows that a more old-school approach to building a business and developing a following with consumers is a viable one for entrepreneurs that should be explored more. He may not the biggest company, but he can be a profitable one for a while.

“I don’t need the entire market,” Arment said. “I can get five percent of the market and be rich.”

It’s nearing two weeks since unions and their cohorts on the Left have thrown a nationwide fit over Scott Walker’s solution to what is ailing Wisconsin. Unions and Democrats have made Wisconsin their cause célèbre by deploying OFA astroturf, the big talking heads, as well as recruiting just about every known Grateful Dead concert attendee on their mailing lists into Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Democratic state senators (now humorously known as fleebaggers) comically continue to hold the state hostage over an issue of union power, politics and money—nothing more and nothing less.

Despite unions’ long hatred of Scott Walker, the new governor is moving to address both the symptoms of the disease and the disease itself—the public-sector union scheme that has molested Wisconsin’s taxpayers and their children by gaming the system. Unions like Wisconsin’s teachers’ union [WEAC] (which was Wisconsin’s biggest-spending lobby in 2009) have been extraordinarily adept at fixing the system through spending millions to elect politicians who, in turn, reward the unions at the expense of the taxpayers.

Now, in response to Walker’s proposals, the Left has gone overboard in their attempt to protect their stranglehold on Wisconsin taxpayers. Even though unions have made clear that their fight is not about their wages or benefits (they’ve offered concessions), they’ve made the fight all about their “right to be unionized” and the fictitious right to “collective bargaining”—which makes their cause even more despotic.

In making Madison into something reminiscent of the spectacle of the 1960s, unions, Democrats and their liberal cohorts are attempting to make the Wisconsin union battle into a civil rights battle, when it is not.  In fact, the Wisconsin fight, when compared to private-sector negotiations is about: 1) the Scope of Bargaining, 2) Union “Income” Security [Right-to-Work vs. Forced Dues], 3) whether Wisconsin should be the unions’ dues collection agency [payroll deduction of dues], and 4) whether public-sector unions should be ‘recertified’ by holding elections every year.

Contrary to the Left’s hyperbole, Scott Walker’s proposals do nothing to eliminate public-sector workers’ right to association, assemblage, or to petition their government. Even pretending that it is a “rights” issue is a mistake. There is nothing in the U.S. Constitution that requires a government to engage in a back and forth negotiation with a collective of workers. In a poignant piece entitled There is No Right to Collective Bargaining, Public Service Research Foundation President David Denholm summarizes the problem with the unions’ argument, stating:

A law granting public-sector unions monopoly bargaining privileges gives a union, a special interest group, two bites at the apple. First, it uses its political clout to elect public officials. Then it negotiates with the very same officials.

When you consider that between 70 and 80 percent of all local government expenditures are personnel costs, you begin to get an idea of the magnitude of the power such laws give unions.

Not only is there no right to collective bargaining in public employment, it is wrong. Collective bargaining distorts and corrupts democratic government.

Collective bargaining is a process for employer-employee relations that was designed for the private sector. This process served as the model for the development of public-sector collective bargaining without taking into account the fundamental differences between the two sectors.

As Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour explains:

“When they have collective bargaining in Wisconsin, on one side of the table there’s state employee unions or the local employee unions. On the other side of the table are politicians that they paid for the election of those politicians,” Barbour said. “Now, who represents the taxpayers in that negotiation? Well, actually, nobody.”

Even Newsweek’s Evan Thomas noted on Sunday [via Newsbusters]:

The Democrats really depend on these public employee unions in a lot of states for their support and for their political muscle, and public employee unions got a problem here. I want to distinguish between unions and public employee unions. Unions obviously are critical, but in the public sector, public employee unions have a pretty easy time getting a lot of benefits because nobody’s really pushing back all that hard.

Admittedly, Walker’s proposals are a threat to unions in several ways. As Walker’s proposals determine:

  1. The extent of what unions will be allowed to bargain about. Walker’s proposal limits bargaining to wages only, effectively eliminating the WEA Trust monopoly which gets its money from local school boards and runs it through a union-run insurance company.

  2. Whether unions can have workers fired for not paying union dues. According to its most recent financial record on file, WEAC (the teachers’ union) raked in over $25 million in 2009. Walker’s proposal makes paying union dues voluntary, as opposed to mandatory. This goes to the lifeblood of any union. If, for example, 20% of those teachers who are currently required to pay union dues as a condition of employment opt out, WEAC could lose up to $5 million a year in revenue. [It is noteworthy that, in the private-sector, the SEIU will be conducting its second strike at a Pennsylvania medical center over the issue of mandatory dues.]

  3. Whether the state will continue being the unions’ dues collector. Walker’s proposal eliminates’ the employers’ payroll deduction of union dues. Again, while it is commonplace for unions to negotiate payroll deduction, there is nothing anywhere (in private or public sector law) that states that it is an employers’ duty to be a union’s collection agency.

  4. Whether the unions will have to ‘re-certify’ every year to maintain representational status. Of all of Walker’s proposals, this seems to be one that could be considered a ‘throw away’ item in negotiations. If Walker’s other proposals get enacted, and union-represented employees feel that the union is worthless, they can initiate an election themselves every calendar under existing law [see Section 111.83(5)[h]] .

Given the ability of the unions and their co-conspirators on the Left to hijack the issue in Wisconsin over these last two weeks, there appears no way for a “win-win” compromise to be worked out. One side or the other will win. Either the unions and the Left, or taxpayers will prevail.

If the Left wins, all chances of reforming public-sector unions will be tossed aside by weak-kneed Republicans who will then be held hostage by temper-tantrum throwing Democrats (see Indiana for example). In addition, the Left has already painted the entire Republicans party with bulls eyes and has for years. Therefore, there is no reason for GOP governors like Scott Walker, Chris Christie and John Kasich to back down, which puts the Left in an untenable situation as well.

In the meantime, the disciples of Saul Alinsky will continue their prattle, attempting to convince America that the Battle of Wisconsin is something more than a fight over union power, politics and money…even though it’s not.
